The 5 Pro Tips for Bartenders

Updated: Mar 29, 2018

Bartending can be an exciting, fast paced and social engaging, however the work can be overwhelming and intimidating. Therefore it is important to be prepared before mixing your first martini.

Here are our 5 vital tips that will give you an understanding of what happens behind the bar.

1. Don't rush but be focused.

From experience I found this to be the first fundamental lesson. Rushing drinks causes disorganisation and also panic, take a deep breath and take things one step at a time. The worst thing you can do is forget the drinks order and have re-ask the customer.

2. Have a good attitude.

You're working in the hospitality industry and everyone needs to remember that. No matter how bad your day is, you need to treat every customer the same way.

Simple things like smiling or making small talk with them goes a long way.

3. Make suggestions.

Suggesting drinks is one of the things that customers appreciate the most, especially if they have been looking at the menu for more than 5 minutes or if they are really indecisive. And if you know a really good drink, why would you keep it to yourself?

4. Always acknowledge guests.

What bothers customers the most is the waiting time so always acknowledge each and every one of them. You could do this while you're making another drink, it could be as simple as a nod in their direction or a smile.

5. Card, Card and Card. Did I say card enough?

You are responsible behind the bar, so make sure everyone drinking is of legal age. If you have the slightest question that someone is underage, it is your responsibility to ask for their ID. It can save you from getting into a lot of trouble.

Bartending is a profession, always keep that in mind and treat it as such.

But most of all, have fun!
